More demon lords make their way to Sanctuary but are killed and imprisoned again. In Diablo 3, the Nephalem powers of some humans are awakening again since the Worldstone no longer suppresses them. However, Baal corrupts the Worldstone leading to the archangel Tyrael destroying it to prevent further issues. In Diablo 2, Diablo frees his brothers Baal and Mephisto, all of whom are ultimately slain and imprisoned again by a group of heroes. Except that he then takes over the body of the hero who slew him. In Diablo 1, Diablo is close to breaking free, corrupts the land and people around his prison but is ultimately killed. None of the above happens in the games, that's all lore from long before. After wreaking havoc for a while, they, too, were imprisoned (since killing them isn't a permanent solution) by a group of human mages called the Horadrim. Ultimately, Inarius was imprisoned in Hell and three of the demonic Prime Evils - Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal - made their way to Sanctuary. The worldstone was altered to suppress the Nephalems' powers, eventually turning them into ordinary humans.Įventually, word of Sanctuary did get to Heaven and Hell and the demons especially wanted to use the humans in their war. Inarius, her lover and angelic counterpart, ultimately stopped her but couldn't bring himself to kill her.

Lilith, the leader of the renegade demons didn't want her children to be part of the war and - in a mad rage - started killing the angels and demons on Sanctuary. These powers would likely not go unnoticed by Heaven and/or Hell and some wanted to use them to end the Eternal conflict. The mixed offspring of those angels and demons were called Nephalem and had incredible powers. Some members of both sides got sick of that, stole a powerful artifact called the Worldstone, and used it to create Sanctuary, a realm hidden from heaven and hell where they could live without war. The conflict is eternal because neither angels nor demons truly die - they just get reborn(ish) after a while. The important stuff for D4 can be summarized in a few sentences and most of that wasn't the story of any previous game, but just background lore.Īngels and Demons are fighting each other in the Eternal Conflict.
